I got this from one of my fave websites for all things uplifting – Sassy Minx. I’m so going to be treating myself to this book – any book that debunks the whole ‘eat egg whites and steamed broccoli to be happy’ myth has got to be good.

The Sassy Minx

Happy, sassy and sorted women (and men) don’t pick at a sad salad with no dressing or refuse to go out with their friends because they are on a diet. Building a conversation around how many Weight Watchers points you’ve had (or avoided) that day is just dullsvile, darling.

When people stop navel gazing about what they should and shouldn’t eat, and start to eat what they enjoy and what makes them feel good (doesn’t have to be chocolate but if it is, enjoy it!) just imagine how much head space will be free for us all to enjoy our lives a little bit more. What would you think about if you could give up thinking about your weight?

The book you’ve always wanted to write? How fantastic your friends are? How beautiful the sunsets can be at this time of the year – or any time of the year? The last hot sex you had, and who you had it with?

Eat like a hot chick, and fill your life with things that matter – ditch the calorie counter and diet books and read things that inspire and delight you. Life is REALLY too short to stuff a mushroom, and it’s certainly too short to look up said mushroom’s syn value.

Sophie

So , Sophie Dahl has an appetite for the scrumptious things in life? Amen to that, it’s about time women stopped being so miserable and buttoned up about weight and food and just learned to enjoy food for what it is – one of life’s great pleasures. Where’s the fun in constantly starving yourself, denying yourself a piece of cake that’s been lovingly baked for you because “I’m on a diet” or swapping gorgeous vintage cheddar for low fat plastic substitute?

Sophie says, “We have to deal with what we’ve got, appreciate it and move swiftly on. We all spend far too much time focusing on what we don’t have and undermining what we do in the process.”

And I loved this too:

“For me, wound up in that delicious sense memory bank are so many tiny things: my mother’s gooseberry fool, eaten in the garden on a hot summer night; my father making me scrambled eggs on toast in his kitchen with the chequered linoleum; the smell of my grandmother Gee-Gee’s house, Victoria sponge, light as a feather and dripping with home-made raspberry jam, just out of the oven.
Then there is the soup that is made for someone who is grief-stricken, the long lazy breakfasts of courtship, the messy tray composed by a child, with lukewarm tea and burnt bitter toast, presented with heartbreaking gravity which prompts you to say, ‘This is the best toast I have ever eaten in my life.’ I remember a picnic with the boy I love on the floor of a new house with no furniture and wine in mugs. ”

So, just for today…even if you can’t manage it the rest of the week…eat, drink and be merry.

Saturday is shopping daySaturday is the best day of the week. It’s better than a Sunday, I think, because a Saturday is full of promise. What are you going to do with the weekend? If you’re like me you could wake up with a couple of dates in mind – girly dates and not with cute males. A date’s a date thought and a girl date involves lots of gossip – which you don’t get with boy dates.

Or you could start with a completely clean slate and decide to follow your weekend wherever it takes you. A lie in maybe? Unless you live where I do and the postie insists on coming early on a Saturday morning as opposed to his usual 11 am. The clatter breaks through my dreams and wakes me up but at least I know it’s Saturday and I have very little that I absolutely have to do.

Saturdays are lazy days because you know that whatever you need to get done, you can procrastinate until Sunday and go shopping instead. Or play on the Internet. Or go for a walk in the sunshine. Or read that book you’ve been meaning to read all year…or just have a snooze.

Yes, Saturday is pretty much my favourite day of the week…

How gorgeous is this?

How gorgeous is this?

How gorgeous is this image? I thought I’d add that in as Saturday morning’s something to make you smile. Flowers always make me smile. Whether it’s someone sending them to me – which is always guaranteed to put a massive Cheshire Cat grin on my face – or just walking past a garden and getting the whiff of warm lavender, flowers are just a real pick me up.
You might not be able to fill your home with fresh bluebells, but I dare you to go out and buy yourself a bunch of tulips or spring flowers today, and see how it perks you up.

Just a quick welcome to the ‘I’ll give you something to smile about’ blog. I started it because I was in a good mood – and anyway, there’s far too much negativity in the world…

Every day I’ll try to inject some sparkle and sunshine into your life – whether it’s an uplifting song, some good news I’ve spotted (like “chocolate to be prescribed free on the NHS”)  or just an observation about something that’s made me smile. Like this song, which always does.  Great Things – Echobelly

Being miserable is boring, and happiness is contagious.

A positive attitude will not solve all the problems in the world, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. So get out there and grin – people will wonder what you’re up to…
